David Voronin Named as Forty Under 40 Honoree

May 18, 2024

The Charlotte Business Journal's 40 under 40 award is one of the most prestigious awards given to young professionals in the Charlotte area. The award recognizes up-and-coming business leaders who are making a positive impact in their field. What sets this year's class apart is their commitment to making Charlotte a better place to live and work during the global pandemic. From launching new businesses to mentoring young entrepreneurs, these leaders are helping shape our city's future. They inspire us all, and we are proud to call them our own!

Like any successful business, the essence of MigWay can be boiled down to an actionable and verifiable mission statement: to build a great company and enrich the lives of our employees! Of the forty young executives chosen this year, David Voronin, founder and CEO of MigWay was awarded the 40 under 40 award thanks to his leadership, innovation, and success in the transportation industry. In this article, we'll explore David and MigWay's story and learn about the strategies used to expand one of the fastest-growing trucking companies in Charlotte.

MigWay Before Forty Under 40

When David Voronin started MigWay in 2012, he had one truck and a lot of ambition. Ten years later, MigWay is one of the largest trucking companies in Charlotte, with over 180 trucks and over 200 employees. The trucking company has been recognized as one of the fastest-growing private businesses in the region and, as a result, has been featured on lists such as the Inc 5000. MigWay has received many reputable awards, such as the Best Place to Work award, and is honored to add its CEO's Forty Under 40 award to its growing list. Voronin attributes MigWay's success to his team's dedication to a culture of excellence.

While many companies closed their doors during the pandemic, MigWay's business expansion remained unaffected. It's also worth noting that while it was acceptable to furlough workers at the time, MigWay did not lay off any staff during the pandemic. Despite truck drivers classifying as essential workers, it was also common for trucking companies to reduce their driver's pay by as much as 50% to reduce the financial impact of the pandemic. Still, MigWay never reduced their driver's pay. Such business decisions would land Voronin's spot on the 40 under 40 list.

MigWay is a driver-focused trucking company. MigWay understands drivers because it first began as a family trucking business. We believe that as long as we keep our drivers in mind first, MigWay will always be a great destination for any professional driver looking for a place to call home. We build personal relationships with each of our drivers and staff. We know the life goals of our team, so we can help them achieve those goals. We envisioned building a trucking company that stood out across all industries and would be known for its professionalism, family atmosphere, and culture of excellence. While being recognized with Charlotte's Forty under 40 is an incredible honor, the definition of success at MigWay is to take care of its drivers and staff.

What it took to make the 40 Under 40 list:

A deep interest in your employee's well-being is a must to be nominated and awarded the 40 under 40 award. "We have an incredible group of people working here," Voronin said. "They're passionate about what they do, and they're always looking for ways to improve. They're what makes MigWay a great place to work, both today and in the future." David Voronin's commitment to his employees doesn't stop at providing them with a great place to work. He also strives to create an environment where they can grow and develop their lives and careers. Voronin personally offers professional development opportunities and mentorship to help his team members reach their full potential.

Nick C., a regional manager who applied to work for MigWay three years ago, chimes in response to David's commitment to their team, "While David has achieved the success which allows him to devote his time to his family and the golf course for the rest of his life, he chooses to invest his time, money, and commitments to the team at MigWay. Many people, including myself, join MigWay on the ground floor, but David promotes internally, so I have seen many people's lives changed here! Because of MigWay's company culture and those who came before us, we genuinely believe that we are a family here! We feel honored that our CEO made it on the 40 under 40 list because we know that he deserves it!"

MigWay's dedication to providing a family atmosphere stems from its origins as a family trucking company. In an industry with a reputation for overworking and underpaying employees, the fact that MigWay's employees have access to every opportunity to succeed in life outside of work is one of the most gratifying aspects of the job. A favorite activity among the drivers is watching the Carolina Panthers playing football from MigWay's upper-level suite at the Bank of America Stadium in uptown Charlotte. The drivers and staff enjoy an incredible buffet, and the view from the top of the stadium is spectacular. Bonds are formed as the team shares laughs and good times together while cheering on their team. Drivers and staff will never forget these moments with their team at MigWay. The winners of Forty under 40 go above and beyond what is expected or deemed as standard in the workplace, and MigWay's CEO David Voronin is no exception!
